The History of the Chiavari Chair

Known as one of the reliable standards in the event décor world, the chiavari chair is not only practical and lightweight, but it is also an elegant and customizable seating option for any type of fete. Seen in weddings and special events alike, these beauties can transform an average event into an upscale affair, and the best part is, they can be found in just about every color you can imagine.

The “Chiavarine” chair originated in 1807 in the little seaside town of Chiavari on the coast of Northern Italy and was designed by a man named Guiseppe Gaetano Descalzi. His design combined the features of several “balloon backed” Parisian chairs that were gifted to him by the founder of the Economic Society of Chiavari.  Originally carved from Cherrywood, the chair was advertised to be ‘so lightweight that event a child could lift it with a single finger.’ This little chair has come a long way since 1800’s, having been featured at events such as White House State Dinners, The Academy Awards, Emmy’s and Grammy’s Galas, and even weddings such as that of Jackie-O and JFK.

It seems that because of its versatility and stylish design, it is a natural choice for many event producers to include in their overall design. Have a specific color in mind? Although the most common varieties are black, white, gold, silver and natural wood, it’s pretty likely that the chair can be found in a more unique color that complements your color palate. Current more modern manifestations include crystal clear Resin versions that appear to be made of glass.

The Chiavari has stood the test of time and seems that it will be here to stay for many years to come.

A Lavender and Blueberry Luncheon

Callaway Gable

This past Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting a Wedding Industry Professionals Association luncheon here at Vibiana. The afternoon began with a cocktail hour where we all had the opportunity to meet and greet with some familiar faces as well as some charming new ones. All guests were then ushered into the main hall where we got to view some of the most amazing tablescapes put together by Rrivre from Rrivreworks, Classic Party Rentals, Tic Tock Couture, Shirvan Designs, Mille Fiore, My Flower Guy and BBJ Linens. We can’t say we had a favorite—how can you compare live magnolias with chandeliers, towers of glass, jewels and roses, and a sleek modern table with little goldfish swimming down the middle of it?

Our guest speaker for the afternoon, Richard Aaron, President of Bizbash, gave a thought-provoking presentation on “Breakthrough Ideas: changing events in 2011”. We then gathered at beautifully set tables dressed in “lavender & blueberry” to enjoy the fabulous spring themed courses created by Good Gracious! Catering. The event concluded after another hour of networking, socializing, and admiring the beautiful vignettes put together by the fabulous vendor sponsors. We could not have asked for a more enjoyable and inspiring afternoon—thanks go out to all of the other sponsor vendors who made this event truly fabulous!
